The North Side Citizens Coalition is a non-profit organization that provides comprehensive community revitalization for those residing, working and utilizing institutions on the north side of Youngstown, Ohio
It’s been a quarter of a century since the North
Side Citizens’ Coalition was chartered—25 years of commitment to the
revitalization of the North Side business and residential communities.
Coalition Programs
The Coalition’s core
neighborhood activities consist of six programs, addressing a variety
of
needs for those living and working in the area.
Recognizing the
architectural beauty behind many of the abandoned and dilapidated
structures, the Coalition’s Preservation Programs aggressively protects
landmarks in historically significant neighborhoods by acquiring and
completely restoring properties as single family homes and supporting the
exterior maintenance efforts of property for owners who occupy properties
in the neighborhood.
Business growth is
encouraged through the Economic Development Programs, which offers owners
the necessary information to help them start and grow their businesses.
And, taking its cue from the quote “Give a man a fish; you have fed him
for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”.
Accomplishments and Achievements
Over the years, the
Coalition has made significant progress in achieving a renaissance for the
community. As part of the Wick Park Model Neighborhood Project, 26
homeowners were given “mini-grants” for improvements. Rayen High School
was also the focus of renovation, with the stadium structure improved, a
new asphalt track and ornamental iron fence installed and old buildings
removed.
The Crandall Park
Playground was also the target of Coalition efforts, with funding secured
for a new drainage system and rebuild of the pond stonewall. The Coalition
has also spearheaded the efforts to have the Crandall Park and Wick Park
Historic Districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
