Tom Shipka, professor and chair emeritus of Philosophy and Religious Studies, is the author of "Are You a Critical Thinker?" The article is the featured reading in Part II of "Thinking About Thinking (Logic)" in the book Fundamentals of Philosophy.
Ron Shaklee, professor of Geography and Director of the University Scholars and Honors Programs, was invited to make a presentation at the Bahamas Historical Society at its headquarters in Nassau. His presentation was entitled, "In Search of San Salvador: A Cartographi" and was read as a part of the society's celebration of the 50th Anniversary of its creation.
Victoria Kress, professor of Counseling, presented "Client Non–Suicidal Self–Injurious Behavior: Considerations for Clinical Supervisors and Counselor Educators" and "Consensual Faculty/Student Sexual Relationships in Counselor Education: Recommendations for Counselor Educators Decision–Making" at the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision national conference in San Diego.
Frank Akpadock, senior research associate and regional scientist in the Center for Urban and Regional Studies, has completed two technical reports. The release of "Measuring the Economic Impact of Pension Reductions and Health Care Cuts on the Salaried Retirees of Delphi Packard Electric Systems Residents in the Mahoning Valley" was covered by all local news channels and several newspapers. Another technical report, "Economic Impact Study of Youngstown State University''s FY 2009–2010 Construction Expenditures of $50 Million on the Youngstown–Warren–Boardman MSA" concluded that YSU's construction projects have a fiscal impact of $120 million and 1,655 direct, indirect, and induced jobs in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys.
Jason Rakers, director of Network Telecommunications and Security, presented a paper entitled "Measuring Wireless Network Success" at the fall 2009 Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on University and College Computing Services conference in St. Louis.
Patrick Bateman, assistant professor of Management, had his article "Productivity and Play in Organizations: Executive Perspectives on the Real–World Organizational Value of Immersive Virtual Environments" recently published in the scholarly journal, Artifact.
William Binning, professor and chair emeritus of Political Science and the Pre–Law Center, YSU alumnus Melanie Blumberg of California University of Pennsylvania and Sarah K. Lewis, YSU undergraduate, co–authored a paper entitled "Party–on–the Periphery: The 2008 Presidential Campaign in Mahoning County" which was presented at the Bliss Institute's State of the Party Conference at the University of Akron. The paper will be published in a forthcoming edition of The State of the Parties.
Kent Engelhardt, associate professor and coordinator of Jazz Studies, authored two books, Charlie Parker, Culture And Influences: Analysis Of His Solos With The Jay McShann Orchestra and Charlie Parker, Culture, And Influences: Analysis Of Selected Early Solos, which were published by VDM (Verlag Dr. Muller) of Germany this summer.
Zbigniew Piotrowski, professor of Mathematics and Statistics, co–authored the article "Weak Continuity Properties of Topologized Groups" for the Czechoslovak Journal of Mathematics with R. Drozdowski of the Pomeranian Academy in Poland, and J. Cao of Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand.
