Grants
A grant is a type of gift aid that does not require repayment. Eligibility for need-based grants is determined using federal, state and institutional formulas that utilize data received from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). All aid listed below requires the FAFSA to be complete.
Federal Pell Grant
The Federal Pell Grant is a need-based grant awarded by the Department of Education.- Awarded to U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens
- Max award is $5,350
- Awarded to student with an EFC of $4,617 or less
- Eligible students must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program and pursuing their first associate or bachelor's degree
- Student's attending less than full time will have their Pell Grant prorated
Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
The FSEOG is a need-based grant funded by the Department of Education. YSU awards this grant to students who complete the FAFSA by the priority deadline date.- Priority Deadline
- Awarded to U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens
- Current award range is $500 to $800
- Eligible students must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program and pursuing their first associate or bachelor's degree
- Student's attending less than full time will have their FSEOG prorated
Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
The ACG is a need-based grant funded by the Department of Education.- Awarded only to Pell Grant recipient
- Full or part-time enrollment (pro-rated for part-time)
- Enrolled in the 1st or 2nd year of academic study at a two or four year institution
- Completed a rigorous secondary school program of study after January 1, 2007
- Current award range is $750 for ACG year 1 and $1,300 for ACG year two
- Second year students must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA
Federal Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant
The SMART grant is a need-based grant funded by the Department of Education.- Pell Grant recipient
- Juniors with between 63 and 93 semester hours and Seniors with between 94 and 124 hours
- Full or part-time enrollment (pro-rated for part-time)
- Eligible majors: physical, life or computer science; engineering; mathematics; technology; or a critical foreign language
- Current award is $4,000
- 3.0 GPA at the end of each semester
Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG)
The Ohio College Opportunity Grant is a need-based grant funded by the State of Ohio.- FAFSA must be completed by October 1 of each year
- Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of 2190 or less
- Full or part-time enrollment (pro-rated for part-time)
- Ohio Resident
- Current award is $1,008
- Eligible students must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program and pursuing their first associate or bachelor's degree
Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Awards (PHEAA)
The PHEAA Grant is a need-based grant funded by the State of Pennsylvania.- FAFSA must be completed by May 1 of each year
- Full or half-time enrollment (pro-rated for less-than-full-time)
- PA Resident
- Eligible students must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program and pursuing their first bachelor's degree
YSU/PHEAA Supplemental Grant
Recognizing the legislative cap on Pennsylvania grants to Pennsylvania residents attending Ohio universities, the supplemental grant program was initiated and funded by the YSU Foundation.- PHEAA recipient attending YSU
- Current award amount is up to $1,052 per academic year
