Lawrence R. and Garnet P. Anderson Memorial Scholarship in Journalism


After more than 30 years of service to Youngstown State University, Dr. Cynthia E. Anderson became the first female and first alumnus to assume the office of President of Youngstown State University. Following her installation as the seventh President of Youngstown State University, Dr. Anderson, who had served as both a faculty member and an administrator at YSU,was sworn in as president on on July 1, 2010. Following her installation as the seventh President of Youngstown State University, Dr. Anderson wanted to support the institution that had provided her with so much opportunity. She established the Lawrence R. and Garnet P. Anderson Memorial Scholarship in Journalism to honor the memory of her late parents. Her mother who died in 1991, encouraged her to follow her professional and academic dreams; and her father, who died in 2000, was a 39-year employee of Youngstow's daily newspaper, The Vindicator, and was a tireless advocate for the role of the press in society. Eligibility requirements include: Minimum 3.0 GPA; Must be pursuing a degree in Journalism at YSU; Entering freshmen through junior class ranking and attending full time; Preference given to a need-based student who completed FASFA.
