Elizabeth “Betty” Bannon Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was created by Betty’s children, Lisa and Breen Bannon, in 2024 to honor their mother who received a B.A. in Music from the Dana School of Music in 1951. Elizabeth “Betty” Bannon was an accomplished musician and community volunteer who performed and taught piano and accordion in the Youngstown area for over 70 years. She began as a child prodigy on the accordion, winning the American Accordion Association’s National Championship in 1946 at the age of 16. She performed on radio programs in New York City and Chicago and an early television variety show in Pittsburgh in the 1950s. She studied piano at the Dana School of Music and continued performing on both instruments throughout her career.
She was most active in the local community, playing regularly at schools, civic groups, churches and nursing homes well into her 80s. After receiving her teaching certificate in the early 1980s, she taught music in Youngstown City School district. We hope Betty’s passion for music and the joy it can bring to others will carry on in the future through the recipients of this scholarship. This scholarship is for a US citizen enrolled in the Dana School of Music, full or part-time with a minimum 2.75 GPA. Preference to a student majoring in Music Education or Music Performance.
