Dr. George and Betty Beelen Endowment

This scholarship was established in 2017 by Dr. George and Mrs. Betty (Kolmacic) Beelen, both of whom were students at the then Youngstown University in the 1950’s. Dr. Beelen earned degrees from Youngstown University, Western Reserve University, and Kent State University as well as a John Hay Fellowship at Northwestern University. He began his academic career as a part-time member of the Youngstown State University History Department faculty in 1962 while teaching at Poland Seminary High School. In 1966, he joined the full-time YSU faculty where his career of thirty years focused on American and US-Latin American History. For fifteen of those years, he served as the History Department Chair. Following his retirement in 1996, Dr. Beelen was appointed to serve as the YSU Legislative Liaison to the Ohio State Legislature in Columbus until 2000. Dr. and Mrs. Beelen are both alums and loyal supporters of Campbell Memorial High School. This scholarship is for an incoming freshman at YSU, who graduated from Campbell Memorial High School with the highest GPA.
