Dr. Charles A. Crans, M.D. and Teresa M. Crans Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2023 in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Charles A. Crans, by their family. Charles married Teresa in 1955 and began raising their family while attending Pharmacy School at the University of Pittsburgh. While working as a pharmacist, he realized his love for helping people and his interest in medicine, so he attended and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1962, later completing his internship at McKeesport Hospital and residency in General Surgery at Youngstown Hospital Association. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Sanctuary Hospital ship in Vietnam. He and his family returned to Youngstown where he ultimately opened his private practice and served more than 15 years as Chief of Surgery of Youngstown Hospital Association North and Southside Hospitals, overseeing the Residency Program and devoting his time as a teacher, mentor, physician, and administrator. He also spent time teaching at NEOUCOM as an associate professor, served as President of the Mahoning County Medical Society in 2007 and 2008, received the Distinguished Physician award in 2009, and valued education and teaching and the importance of making a difference in the lives of everyone he encountered – always with a smile on his face and a positive word. Teresa supported his work and his success, and together, they emphasized the importance of education in each of their five children and eleven grandchildren. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be enrolled full-time in the BaccMed program at YSU, and have been accepted into the NEOMED program.
