Dr. Patricia Humbertson Memorial Scholarship in Geography

This endowment was established in 2014 by Jeremy and Vanessa Mercer to provide a scholarship for a deserving geography major in honor of Dr. Humbertson, a former Geography Professor at Youngstown State University who lost her battle with cancer in 2013. Dr. Humbertson was more than a professor - she was a mentor, a teacher, an academic, and a friend. While she had a gruff exterior and could, and did demand excellence in the classroom, she had a kind heart and devotion to helping her students succeed. She was bigger than life and made a tremendous impact on Jeremy while he was a student at YSU; she was the reason he added Geography as one of his majors. Dr. Humbertson made Geography fun, taking students on field trips, turning dry facts into interesting stories, and challenging conventional wisdom - North is not "up" and not always at the top of the map. Dr. Humbertson also enjoyed life, was a tremendous storyteller, and was someone who epitomized greatness as a professor. This scholarship is for a student(s) majoring in geography with a minimum 3.0 GPA, entering their junior or senior year with a completed FAFSA.
