John C. Cox Scholarship

John C. Cox was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1943. A lifelong resident, John grew up on the city’s southside, attending St. Patrick’s School and Cardinal Mooney High School. The beginning of his commitment to the community began in 1980 when he became president of Celtic Steel until its sale in 1990. It was then that he decided to give a career in politics a try. Dedicated to helping the underserved, he pursued a trustee seat in Boardman Township. John would spend the next 12 years sitting in that seat, giving a voice to thousands of Boardman residents. Friends and family of John came together in 2005 to establish the John C. Cox Scholarship to honor him and his lifelong, political commitment to the Mahoning Valley. An eligible student(s) for this scholarship must be majoring in political science, with a minimum 2.4 GPA. First consideration will be given to student(s) residents of Mahoning County, followed by student(s) residents of Columbiana County. Preference will be given to student(s) who demonstrate community involvement, commitment to Mahoning County, and are involved in political organizations or public service.
