Becky Smith Memorial Scholarship in History
This scholarship was established in 2012 in memory of Becky Smith, a 1999 honors graduate of Lakeview High School. Becky continued her education at Kent State University earning a cum laude Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design in 2003. After working a few different local positions, she decided to attend Youngstown State University for her Master of Arts with a certificate in Applied History. After graduation, Becky turned her interest in historic preservation into a successful career as Main Street Manager in Butler, Pennsylvania. Becky's life was abruptly cut short at the age of 30 after being injured in an automobile accident. Her family decided this scholarship would be a good way to continue some of Becky's hopes and plans and help others accomplish some of the things Becky wasn’t given the time to do. This scholarship is for a graduate student(s) who is a U.S. citizen and a resident of Columbiana, Mahoning, or Trumbull County in OH and Lawrence, Mercer, or Butler County in PA. majoring in history, with a preference toward applied history with a minimum 2.8 GPA (must maintain a 3.0 GPA for possible renewal). Preference to a student(s) not holding a graduate assistant or assistantship position. Preference to a student who has volunteered 25 hours a semester at the Youngstown Historical Center for Industry and Labor, Youngstown CityScape, Trumbull County Historical Society, or Mahoning Valley Historical Society. Only if there are no graduate students that are eligible for this scholarship will it be open to an undergraduate student with a 2.8 GPA or higher.
