Dr. Charles A. McBriarty Endowed Scholarship


The Dr. Charles A. McBriarty Endowed Scholarship was established in 2022 by Scott Schulick to acknowledge Dr. McBriarty’s 26 years of service at YSU. Charlie’s education began in 1940 at St. Mary’s Catholic School, and then later Elgin High School before graduating in 1952. He enrolled at the University of Colorado and attended for 2 years, before being drafted into the U.S. Army to serve for 2 years at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. In 1956, Charlie completed his military service with an Honorable Discharge. After being discharged, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University, going on to become a high school teacher and athletic coach at Marquette High School in Ottawa, Illinois. He later returned to higher education as a graduate student at Indiana University, Bloomington Indiana, where he earned both master's and Doctoral degrees. In 1964 he accepted a position at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. This position marks the beginning of his career in the academic field of Student Services. In 1972, Charlie accepted the position of Associate Vice President of Student Affairs at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas. In 1974 he accepted the position of Vice President of Student Affairs at Youngstown State University. He became the Special Assistant to the President in 1994, where he remained until his retirement in 2000. This scholarship is open to full or part-time students, in addition to undergraduate and graduate students. Financial need may be considered, and any recent high school graduates applying must have a 4.0 high school GPA.
