Mary Jo Monakee Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2021 by the sisters of Mary Jo Monakee; Renee and Pamela Monakee. Mary Jo was born and raised in Boardman, Ohio. She took great pride in being an active student at Boardman High, and was both a Spartan Marching Band member and Majorette. Within a year of graduating from high school, her family relocated, and she had to transfer out of YSU. She ended up graduating with honors from Florida Atlantic University with a degree in business and marketing. After a successful thirty-year career in advertising, Mary Jo returned to college at age 50 to fulfil one more aspiration: children’s education. She had an exceptional ability to reach children in a loving way, and facilitate their learning abilities. Mary Jo was the beneficiary of scholarships and grants throughout college, and understood the vital necessity for financial aid for many families – her own education would have been near impossible without such aid.

This scholarship is being offered to a minority student (preference will be given to an African American or Latino student), enrolled in any teacher education program, attending full time or part time, with a minimum 2.5 GPA and a completed FAFSA. Preference will be given to a graduate of Boardman High School and/or a student majoring in Early Childhood Education or Primary Education.
