Atty. Richard McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship


This scholarship was established in 2020 in memory of Atty. Richard "Dick" McLaughlin by his family and friends. He was a 1958 Youngstown College graduate where he majored in Political Science. After Youngstown College, he attended Georgetown Law School for his Law and Master of Law degrees. In addition to working as an attorney, Dick took full advantage of living in Washington, D.C. during the 1960s. His most fond memories included attending John F. Kennedy's inauguration and funeral, proudly participating in the March on Washington, and attending Martin Luther King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

Dick was a civil rights activist who fought for equality for all people. He worked for several political campaigns until he returned to Youngstown in 1970 to run for Congress. Although his run was unsuccessful, he stayed and opened his law firm where he practiced for over 50 years.

He was active in the YSU community for many years including serving on the Board of Trustees for 9 years, serving as Chair for 2 years, was a board member of the YSU Foundation for 10 years, where he is now Trustee Emeritus, as well as serving on the Board of the YSU Alumni Association. Dick was an active member in the community serving in many different capacities where he always found ways to give back. As a first-generation college student, Dick highly valued education, tenacity, and hard work. He is remembered for his kindness, generosity, and commitment to helping others. This scholarship is for minority student(s) enrolled full time, with a minimum 2.5 GPA majoring in General Studies as an undergraduate. Preference given to a first-generation college student.
