Gloria Douglas Scholarship in Education for Minority Students

Gloria Douglas was born an only child to Willa Rousseau and John Winston. She attended and graduated from The Rayen School in 1952. She attended school at a time when black women were encouraged to seek jobs in the service field upon graduation; to become either waitresses or secretaries. In 1967, as a mother of 5 children, she was hired as a preschool teacher at the Gilead House. Two years later, she was hired as a teacher in the Head Start Program. Gloria spent the next 39 years with this agency, preparing young children to enter elementary schools throughout the Youngstown City School District. This scholarship was created by her children and grandchildren in 2021 to assist young undergraduate minority men and women who are seeking careers in the field of education. These students must be attending YSU full-time with a minimum 2.5 GPA. This scholarship is need based, so a completed FAFSA is required.
