Raymond Baker Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2021 by Mark, Dave, and Mike Baker to honor their father Raymond (Ray) Baker. Ray was the youngest of six and was the first person from his family to attend college. He graduated from high school six months shy of his 18th birthday and immediately enlisted in the US Navy. He served on the USS Toledo during The Korean War. He saw action during the Invasion at Inchon and received 3 Battle Stars. After being honorably discharged he enrolled at YSU as a beneficiary of the GI Bill. Four years later he graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering. For seven years following his graduation he was a part time instructor in the YSU School of Engineering. Ray was married to the former Audrey "Dottie" Ruane for 52 years until his passing in 2008. Ray's decision to get a college education paved the way for his family's educational pursuits. All three of his children are college graduates and each of his six grandchildren are as well, with several achieving or pursuing advanced degrees. In addition, after Ray graduated, two of his sisters attended YSU and earned their degrees. Ray's decision in 1952 to attend college had a far-reaching positive impact on his family. The Baker family hopes that this scholarship will assist others to have their own education story. Eligible students for this scholarship must have a 2.5 GPA, may be attending full or part-time, with a preference to full time students. Preference to first generation college students and graduates of Boardman, Campbell, or Poland High Schools. Need may be a consideration.
