Joseph & Lillian Oleksak & Phyllis Oleksak Ashley Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2019 by Phyllis Oleksak Ashley in honor of her parents. Phyllis wants to support future students at YSU who dream of becoming educators. Phyllis knew at the age of six that she wanted to be a teacher. She endured dyslexia when the condition was not known and there was no help available. Undeterred, her passion to follow her dream would ultimately lead her to a career in education. Phyllis graduated from South High School in 1958, as a member of the National Honor Society. She remained diligent in her pursuit to become a teacher. She graduated from YSU in the spring of 1963. She taught at Gilbert Elementary in Cleveland, Ohio followed by a year at Roosevelt Elementary in Youngstown, Ohio. Moving to Houston, Texas, she taught in the Spring Branch School District. This scholarship embodies the strong will and determination by which Phyllis has lived her life. Furthermore, it encourages those who dream of being a teacher, to do so, out of love for children and especially the desire to help the underachiever.
