Patrick Ungaro Scholarship


Patrick Ungaro was born in Youngstown, Ohio, growing up in the Smokey Hollow Section. After graduating from the Rayen School, Mr. Ungaro attended Youngstown State University, graduating in 1965. Mr. Ungaro worked in the Youngstown City Schools as a teacher, coach, school counselor and principal at various locations in the Youngstown City Schools district. Mr. Ungaro was a devoted public servant, where he served as 3rd Ward Councilman, President of Council and eventually Mayor of the City of Youngstown from 1984 to 1997. Mr. Ungaro then served as administrator of Liberty Township from 2003 until his death in 2019.

Mr. Ungaro believed in the importance of education and knowledge in order for people to achieve their very best. As a first-generation college graduate, Patrick demonstrated what can be achieved by the upward mobility provided by a college education. It is an honor for the Patrick Ungaro's family to establish this scholarship as a legacy to their remarkable husband, father, teacher, mentor, coach and major. This scholarship is for a student attending YSU full-time, who is a sophomore or higher in class standing, with a minimum 3.0 GPA and has a completed FAFSA. Preference will be given to a student who can demonstrate financial need, who has graduated from a high school within the City of Youngstown or Liberty High School, and is a first-generation college student.
