Archie and Angela Finamore Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2019 in memory of Archie and Angela ("Angie") Finamore by their children, Alyssa Finamore, Alyson Chepla, Michael Finamore, and Matthew Finamore. Archie was born in 1948, the son of Italian immigrant parents. He grew up in Smokey Hollow and was a graduate of the Rayen School. He received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from Youngstown State University. At YSU, he was Commander of the ROTC cadets and Commander of the Pershing Rifles Company P-1. In the Army Corps of Engineers, Archie served in the cleanup effort at Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and Operation Desert Storm. He retired from the Army Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel. He also retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation, where he worked as a civil engineer for almost 30 years.

Angie was born in Austria, in 1949, the daughter of Croatian parents. She and her family immigrated to the United States, and they lived in upstate New York, the north side of Youngstown, and eventually settled in Struthers, where she graduated from high school. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Youngstown State University and a Master's degree in library science from the University of Pittsburgh. Angie worked in various libraries in the Youngstown area; she adored being a children's librarian and having story hours.

Archie and Angie saw the promise of Youngstown, and they truly embody its spirit of hard work, moxie, and loyalty. Despite very humble beginnings, each received a college education and had a successful career. Youngstown provided them with an opportunity to better themselves and live happy and fruitful lives. There is no better way to honor their legacy than to provide a similar opportunity to a deserving person in the Youngstown area. This scholarship is for an undergraduate student, attending full or part-time, with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference given to high school graduates from Mahoning (OH), Trumbull (OH), and Columbiana (OH).
