Dr. Alexander K. Phillips and Toula C. Phillips Memorial Scholarship


This scholarship was established in 2019 by The Alexander & Toula Phillips Charitable Foundation. Dr. Alexander K. Phillips and his family immigrated to the Youngstown area from Buenos Aires, Argentina, when he was four years old. At a young age he decided to pursue a professional career in medicine. During very difficult economic times he persevered, excelling in his studies, and realized his dream. As a compassionate and talented surgeon, he was committed to providing excellent care to the Youngstown community throughout his career. He married Toula Carvelas, an honor student at Rayen High School, who was a devoted wife and mother. She contributed in a variety of ways throughout her life to social service organizations in the area. Together they were tireless philanthropists providing support to many causes in Youngstown. Their vision perseveres after their death to financially support students pursuing a career in medicine while attending Youngstown State University. An eligible student(s) for this scholarship must be an undergraduate student, attending full-time who is majoring in Biology or Chemistry with a Pre-Medical track focus. Student must have a minimum 3.25 GPA and a completed FAFSA. Preference will be given to students with junior or senior class standing.
