Scott Thomas Wenger Memorial Scholarship

This endowment was established by the George and Deborah Wenger family and friends in loving memory of Scott Wenger.

Scott spent his first seven years in suburban Cleveland before moving to New Jersey with his family. In 2000, he returned to Cleveland to live with his brother in Cleveland Heights. After 9/11, Scott enlisted in the Marine Corp telling his father that he "needed to be part of something important".

Stationed at Camp Lejune, North Carolina, Scott served in the 2nd Amphibious Battalion as crew chief of an Amtrak (Amphibious Assault Vehicle). Scott did two tours of Iraq, including the Battle of Falujah. He achieved the rank of Sergeant before leaving the Corp with an honorable discharge.

Scott returned to Cleveland and lived in Ohio City, and then Tremont. He was extremely popular and nicknamed "The Mayor" of those two neighborhoods.

Although it rarely showed up in his daily public life, the demons of war were still there. On May 5th, 2015, Scott became a statistic joining the average of 28 veterans who take their lives every day. The funding for this scholarship is the result of a large fundraiser held in downtown Cleveland to honor Scott. It was attended by over 250 people.

This scholarship is for a student who is a Military Veteran with an honorable or general discharge that is the result of an injury or illness. The student must have a minimum 2.25 GPA. No field of study or major required, open to undergraduate and graduate students.
