Free Application for Federal Student Aid
Start Here
Whether you are a new or continuing YSU student, the first step in applying for Federal Financial Aid is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Here are a few tips and resources to help you complete your FAFSA.
  • Request a FSA ID
  • Have your tax information and W2s available
  • Answer 'Yes' to IRS Data Retrieval
  • List YSU's school code 003145
In addition, our financial aid counselors are available, by appointment, to assist you in completing the FAFSA.  Watch the Department of Education's "How to Fill Out the FAFSA" at the link provided below.

Budgeting and Financial Planning
Setting a budget, managing debt and understanding basic money management skills can lead to financial success upon graduation.  The first step in any financial plan is to create a budget.  Here are some helpful tips to create your budget:
  • Plan and anticipate your monthly expenses and costs to attend Youngstown State University
  • Use tools like our Tuition estimator to predict your costs owed directly to YSU
  • Next add to direct costs your personal and living expenses
  • Have your financial aid in order early and determine the loan amount needed to bridge the gap
  • Do not treat your student loan refund as excess income
  • Limiting your refund and loan indebtedness is a financially sound decision
