Dependency Status - If a student cannot answer yes to one of the following independent verification questions, then that student is deemed dependent and must provide
parental information on his/her financial aid application.
- Is the student at least 24 years old or will the student turn 24 this year?
- Is the student married?
- Is the student working on a master's or doctorate?
- Is the student a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces?
- Is the student an orphan or ward of the court?
- Does the student have any legal dependents other than a spouse?
- Is the student currently serving active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces?

Federal Work Study - allows a student to earn money by working a part-time job on campus. Federal Work Study is not subtracted from a student’s bill.
A student being paid under work study will receive a pay check from the university. Students must demonstrate financial need to be considered for this award.

Martin Luther King Award - Funded by the YSU Foundation, this award is available to graduates of Youngstown/Warren inner-city schools.
Students must be admitted to the University in good standing or, if currently enrolled at YSU, must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5
and be registered for at least 6 credit hours.

ACG Grants - to be eligible a student must enrolled in a full-time degree program; be enrolled in the 1st or 2nd year of academic study
at Youngstown State; have completed a rigorous secondary school (high school) program of study after January 1, 2007 (if a first year student) and after January 1, 2006
(second year student). If the student is a second year student, a cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale is a requirement.
Student must also be Pell Grant eligible to qualify for this award. More information is provided on our web site.

SMART Grants - to be eligible a student must be enrolled in a full-time degree program; major in physical, life or computer science, engineering,
mathematics, technology, or a critical foreign language; possess a cumulative 3.0 GPA; Student must also be Pell Grant eligible to qualify for this award.
Only Juniors with between 63 and 93 semester hours and Seniors with between 94 and 124 hours may receive the award.

Outside Aid - other or outside aid is aid that a student anticipates receiving from outside funding sources.
Examples of "other aid" include: miscellaneous scholarships, community and high school awards, Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation benefits,
employee tuition assistance, Ohio War Orphans and Ohio National Guard.

Tax Form Conditions - When estimating a student's EFC, certain
assumptions can be made for students and parents who are eligible to file a 1040A, 1040EZ or are non-filers.
Use the following criteria to determine if you are eligible to file a 1040A or 1040EZ.
To file a 1040EZ the tax payer must meet all of the following
conditions:
File single or married-joint return
Not claim dependents
Have taxable income less than $100,000
Earn less than $1,500 in taxable interest
Have no student loan interest deduction or an education tax credit
To file a 1040A the tax payer must meet all of the following
conditions:
Income and deductions limited to:
Wages, salaries and tips
Taxable interest and/or ordinary dividends
IRA distribution
Capital gains
Pension distributions
Unemployment
Social Security Benefits
Taxable scholarships/grants
IRA and/or student loan interest deductions
Do not itemize deductions
Taxable income less than $100,000
Claim only child, education, earned income, child and dependent childcare expenses, elderly or disabled, adoption or rate reduction
credits
File single, married-joint return, married-separate returns or head of household

Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) - provide the adjusted gross income for the person referenced in the question.
If adjusted gross income was zero, simply enter '0'. Married parents and married students should enter the total family AGI for both themselves
and spouses. This information may be found on your 1040 tax form.

Taxes Paid - enter the total amount of your (and spouse's) income tax for the past tax year.
This number is the actual amount paid to the government and not the amount withheld from your wages.

Cash balances - provide the balance of cash, savings, and checking accounts. Do not include student financial
aid. This information is used in determining a family's total asset contribution. Asset contribution is one factor in calculating the
Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

Investment balances - provide the net worth of your investments, including real estate (not your home).
Use the market value of investments as of today. Net worth - current value minus debt.
Investments include - real estate investments, trust funds, money market funds, mutual funds, certificates of deposits, stocks, bonds, other securities,
college savings plan, commodities
Investments do not include - the home you live in, life insurance, retirement plans, pre-paid tuition plans, or cash, savings and checking referred to
in previous questions
