YSU Programs
Youngstown State University offers institutional aid programs for eligible students.  The Martin Luther King Inner-City Achievement Award and Federal Work-study require the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by the February 15 priority deadline.
 

Martin Luther King Inner-City Achievement Award


Funded by the YSU Foundation, this award is available to graduates of Youngstown/Warren inner-city schools.  Graduates of the following schools are eligible for the Martin Luther King Inner-City Achievement Award:
 
Calvary Christian Academy Niles McKinley Wilson
Campbell Memorial Rayen Youngstown Christian School
Cardinal Mooney South John F. Kennedy
Chaney Struthers Warren G. Harding
East Ursuline Warren Western Reserve
Farrell, PA New Castle, PA Sharon, PA

Criteria:  Students must be admitted to the University in good standing or, if currently enrolled at YSU, must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 and be registered for at least 6 credit hours.

Value:  Need-based awards of up to $1500 per academic year.

Application:  Student must complete the FAFSA by February 15 for priority consideration.

 


 

Graduate Assistant Fee Remission

Graduate assistants are graduate students working toward a degree who are employed by the University through the School of Graduate Studies and receive a yearly stipend.  Graduate assistants are also entitled to remission of tuition, including, where applicable, the non-resident tuition surcharge.  Contact the School of Graduate Studies at 330-941-3091 for application.
 

Intercollegiate Athletics Grants-In-Aid

Monies appropriated by the Board of Trustees from the general fee revenue are available for grants-in-aid to student athletes.  Grants may include tuition, room and board, and books.  The athletic director, in consultation with the team coach, has the primary responsibility for determining the recipient and amount of award.  Contact the Office of Intercollegiate Athletics at 330-941-7208 for information.
 

Federal Work-Study

Federal Work-Study is need-based employment on a part-time, hourly basis.  The rate of pay for such jobs is regulated by the federal minimum wage law.  To qualify for Federal Work-Study, you must be enrolled, be in good academic standing, and have a demonstrated financial need.  This program is available to both undergraduate and graduate students.  To qualify, file the Free Application for Federal Aid by the February 15 deadline and indicate on the FAFSA that you are interested in this program.  For detailed information on Federal Work-Study click here.
 

On-Campus Student Employment

Over 1,800 students are employed on campus each year. Youngstown State University students are given absolute priority for employment in all part-time, non-civil-service, hourly-wage jobs.  The rate of pay for such jobs is governed by minimum-wage law, and students are usually limited to 20 hours of work per week.  In order to be employed on campus a student must be in good academic standing and currently enrolled for a minimum of one course of no less than three credits.  All available on-campus student employment positions are posted online at www.cc.ysu.edu/student-employment.
