The following types of need-based aid are available to eligible
Youngstown State University students. Students should
complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by
the priority deadline of February 15. YSU offers students the

financial aid award.
Federal Pell GrantsThis is a federal grant intended to provide financial
assistance to eligible students. The current award range is $890
to $4731. Eligibility is need-based and available to
undergraduates who are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens.
Pell grants awards are based on the student's Expected Family
Contribution (EFC), which is derived from the completion of the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The
award is limited to students who have not attained a first
bachelor's degree. Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)The FSEOG is awarded to students with exceptional financial need. First consideration will be given to those students with maximum
Pell Grant eligibility. To qualify, an undergraduate student must
be registered for at least six credit hours, be maintaining
satisfactory academic progress, and not be in default on any Title
IV aid. The current award range is $500 to $1000. The
FAFSA filing deadline for priority consideration of this award is
February 15. The award is limited to students who have not
attained a first bachelor's degree.
Academic Competitiveness GrantsThis is a federal grant which provides financial assistance to eligible students meeting the following criteria: U.S. Citizen; Pell Grant recipient; enrolled in a full-time degree program; be enrolled in the 1st or 2nd year of academic study at a two or four year institution; has completed a rigorous secondary school program of study after January 1, 2007 (if a first year student) and after January 1, 2006 of a second year student. If the student is a first-year student, (s)he must not have been previously enrolled in an undergraduate program. If the student is a second year student, (s)he must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Awarded amounts are $750 for first year students and $1300 for second year students.For detailed information on Federal ACG Grants from the Department of Education click here. National SMART GrantsThis is a federal grant which provides financial assistance to eligible students meeting the following criteria: Full-time enrollment; major in physical, life or computer science, engineering, mathematics, technology, or a critical foreign language; possess a cumulative 3.0 GPA; and be a Pell Grant recipient. Only Juniors with between 63 and 93 semester hours and Seniors with between 94 and 124 hours may receive the award. Veterans Administration Education AssistanceThe Department of Veterans Affairs
provides education assistance to veterans or current armed
services personnel. Programs include contributory plans,
rehabilitation benefits, work-study, and dependent/spousal
